Underpass with Special Effects

The new tunnel under the A2/N2 in Eindhoven, and with it the entire new road structure in Eindhoven Northwest, was officially opened in October 2023. Metadecor has provided the wall finishing on the inside of this tunnel by installing a double screen with a moiré effect. MD Designperforation and MD Flack were used to create an optical effect that makes the wall appear to move when you drive past it. The end result is a spectacular work of art!

The moiré-effect

Metadecor was asked by Strukton Civiel to finish the interior of the underpass. The flat finish consists of an aluminum auxiliary construction to which a flat panel is attached. The wall covering has a double structure: a flat layer with a perforated layer in front of it. The flat panel has a print with a gradient in the colors blue and green. The MD Designperforation panel installed in front of the flat panel has a rectangular perforation.

The print on the back plate is tilted, and by placing a rectangular perforation panel in front of it, a moiré effect has been created when you pass by the screens. This effect is created by the print behind the MD Flack panel and the way in which the perforation is made. The way in which this was devised in collaboration with the architect and engineers at Metadecor is simple but smart. When passing through the tunnel at the recommended speed, a natural movement is created in a small space, which creates a dynamic effect.

Artistic perforation

The front screen is a true work of art in itself. The MD Designperforation panels, firmly attached to an auxiliary structure, reveal a pattern of perforations. This perforations are made with the MD Designperforation type DE130. Placed with precision and screwed in a meandering manner, these panels transform the wall into a decorative element. Vertical screw spacings of approximately 700 mm and horizontal spacings of approximately 500 mm ensure a streamlined entity.

The auxiliary construction MD Verti DEV111 forms the solid basis of our wall covering. Aluminum uprights and steel omega brackets provide stability and support. This substructure, which has been carefully designed, remains subtly in the background while still providing essential structural support. The ability to adjust depth deviations of up to +/- 15 mm guarantees seamless installation, even on less than perfect surfaces.

In this way, Metadecor has created an innovative, distinctive interior that passing motorists will not soon forget.
