White Façade Skin of Expanded Metal
Gutenberg is a passive social housing development and the first Belgian example within the European ECO-life programme. This initiative promotes sustainable and CO₂-neutral construction in the social housing sector. For this project, Metadecor realised a semi-transparent, undulating façade using MD Expanded metal.

On the street-facing side, the main façade was deliberately set back, creating space for a second, gently curving, semi-transparent skin. For this, we used MD Expanded Metal with the MD Grafica pattern. The façade, made from white-coated galvanised steel, functions as a sun screen. Manually operated shutters, also in expanded metal, provide a balance between light, visibility, and privacy. These shutters are made from MD Expanded Metal as well and mounted using the MD Apertura fastening system. The supporting structure is attached with our MD Resto system.
The terraces are enclosed on both sides with matte, translucent panels to ensure privacy. The balustrades are also made from white-coated steel, contributing to the building’s clean and cohesive appearance.
